If you have ever defaulted on
debt, you probably received at least one phone call from your debt
collector. You may have even experienced an encounter with a debt
collector because you had the same name as somebody who was trying
to be tracked down. Although debt collector's are doing their job
trying to get in touch with someone who has defaulted on their
credit, they can sometimes push the envelope too far in terms of
calling you several times throughout the day or at odd hours.
However, what many people do not realize is there are several laws
which debt collectors must abide by according to the Fair Debt
Collection Practices Act. According to this law, debt collectors are
not permitted to make phone calls before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m., and
may not make telephone calls at a persons place of work if informed
that one's employer objects to such telephone calls. Although you
cannot ignore your debt problems and should seek debt consolidation
services, it still behooves you to know your rights. |
